Staying on track in the lead up to Christmas

My top tips for staying on track in the lead up to Christmas and the Summer holidays.
Don't let the silly season derail you!

Social situations are often times where we are tempted to eat foods that do not nourish us, especially over Xmas and New Year!
Keep focused on these basics for staying on track
  • Make a big effort to really prioritise your nutrients and put yourself first when you are at home. That means nourishing food, exercise and good quality sleep wherever possible. It's the majority of what you do that really matters, not the things you do sometimes.
  • Continue to prioritise nourishing whole food from nature. Your body is designed to run off these foods not from processed packaged foods. Focus on what your body loves i.e. meat, eggs, fruit, veggies, root veggies, coconut products etc.
  • Eat regularly. Have 3-5 meals a day. For example, Breakfast = 2 eggs on paleo toast with avocado and fruit on the side. Morning tea = a smoothie. Lunch = same as what you had for dinner the night before for example chicken salad with lots of veggies and fruit on the side. Afternoon tea = nuts and some veggie sticks. Dinner is some type of good quality protein such as steak, salad and root veggies like roast kumara. Eating regularly will keep you well-nourished, so you won't have cravings and won't be as tempted to eat processed foods.
  • Have protein at every meal. Protein keeps you full, feeds your body, brain, muscles and organs. We feel much calmer and more regulated when optimal levels of protein are on board.
  • Have greens/veggies/fruits at every meal to keep your body alkaline and working optimally. The fiber from these plant foods feed the good bacteria in your body to improve your immunity, run your metabolism, create energy, remove toxins, make neurotransmitters for a healthy mood...the list goes on!
  • If you are staying with friends or relatives that don't eat this way, then take your own food, make meals that you know suit you and your family. Explain why you need to eat this way to keep yourself on track. Don't feel bad about it, put yourself first. You might inspire them to make changes too!
Tips for staying on track when you are going out to a function or out for dinner
  • If you know you are going somewhere that won't have nourishing food, then eat plenty before you go. If you are full and nourished, you will make good choices and won't feel tempted to overeat on food that doesn't serve your health
  • If it is a bring a plate type situation, then take food with you to suit your needs. Eat your food first, then you won't be tempted to eat foods that may make you feel inflamed or unwell.
  • If you do eat the foods that you are trying to avoid, then notice how your body feels after this. Often the tiredness, low mood, pain and inflammation is enough to reconfirm to us we don't want to go back to eating it regularly again. Rebalance yourself at the very next meal with whole foods that make you feel great again.
  • Eating the odd meal out of balance here or there shouldn't upset things too much (unless you are allergic to the foods). However, multiple meals out of balance is a slippery slope that will drive symptoms crank back up (We don't want that!!) Try to rebalance yourself at the very next meal if you do have a meal that you know isn't nourishing for your body. Wash that meal away with lovely nutrients from nature so you can get back on track quickly again.
